I discovered Jack Cavanaugh by searching for Christian
fiction at our local library. I really have no idea why I like his books
so well. His writing is pretty much exactly opposite of the type of
stories I normally like. They aren't fast paces with lots of twists and
turns. No supernatural elements. At times, they're quite sappy and
romantic. For the most part they have nothing of what I'm looking for in a
book. However, the two element they do have re a fictional story in a
historical setting and usually those stories have some great things to ponder.
The characters are wonderfully written and the stories are carefully
constructed. He has several novels, but I have only read a few.

Songs in the Night Series--The Songs in the Night series consists of
While Mortals Sleep,
His Watchful Eye, and
Above All Earthly Powers. While they are a little sappy and not as fast
paced or edgy as I generally like, these books are unique and definitely opened
my eyes to a whole new thought about World War II. I enjoy history and
especially studying World War II. While I was familiar with the atrocities
committed against Jews, what I had never considered, were the average German
citizens who did not support the Nazi agenda. This series is about them. Those
Germans who opposed the Nazis and their struggle in post Nazi Germany.
Each book has multiple heroes. They tackle everything from the
extermination of the disabled to the effects of communist East Germany. In
an effort to not spoil any plots, I'll stop here, but for people who enjoy books
about people as much as events, these are perfect.

Glimpses of Truth/Beyond
the Sacred Page--Glimpses of Truth and Beyond the
Sacred Page make up the Book of Book Series. Both follow the misguided attempts
of church leaders to end the translation of the Bible into English. Both books
reminded me of a Wycliffe missionary who spoke at our church a few years ago.
He recounted the story of a Solomon Island native’s reaction to the Biblical
story of Jesus healing the paralyzed man. The missionary said the man looked at
him with disbelief as he finally understood Jesus healed a man paralyzes
since birth. The incredible effects of God’s word understood in a person’s
native language can never be discounted. These books delve into those who were
able to finally understand what the Bible was about, how it touched their lives,
and what they were willing to suffer to bring God’s word to the ordinary
person. They certainly caused a little guilt as I began to better understand
those who gave their lives so I could so casually and sporadically read the
Bible in English.
